![]() I was absolutely thrilled with the result and equally happy to make it back up the embankment to the trail. I wasn’t sure if I should do it, but I really wanted to capture this image. It was an extremely steep, muddy and root filled scramble down a steep 50 foot embankment to get in position. Photographing these falls was the biggest challenge of the trip. Our next target on the river was Koosah Falls. "Summer Crossing" - Click Photo To Purchase As it turns out, this may have been good fortune, as I really like the image. It was not possible to find a place along the river to photograph it from there, so I decided on an image of the bridge itself. I simply cannot pass up bridges like this. Just up the trail from Sahaile Falls is a wonderful log footbridge that goes over the river. It’s a slippery, muddy climb down the embankment and you risk falling in the river, but the result is worth it! "Sahalie Falls" - Click Photo To Purchase To get the scene right, the trick is to get back from the falls to include the river. Sahalie Falls is a large and powerful waterfall that you start out quite close to. The river really does have that much color! You would think from looking at the images that it couldn’t really be that colorful and that I increased the color. There is a section of the McKenzie River, that for some reason, has a bright and deep blue color to it. We moved on to central Oregon, basing in the town of Sisters, which is a wonderful little town northwest of Bend and close to the rivers and waterfalls we were targeting. "Trillium Lake Sunset" - Click Photo To Purchase The kayaks and paddleboarders didn’t do the reflection any favors, but I do feel this image conveys the enjoyment of being out there with others to enjoy a great sunset. The calm conditions at Trillium Lake were just what we had hoped for, but we didn’t figure in all the people that would be at the lake on a Saturday afternoon enjoying various summer activities. We did make one afternoon trip down to Trillium Lake for sunset before moving up our schedule to head to central Oregon. We were disappointed that the trails and waterfalls around the Gorge were still closed off due to the Eagle River fires of 2017. We started this expedition in northern Oregon around the Columbia River Gorge. ![]() We had a fantastic time together and the search for images almost became unimportant. Noise interferes with normal encoding and decoding of the message carried by the channel between source and receiver. ![]() This can be external or internal/psychological. “Interference is anything that blocks or changes the source’s intended meaning of the message” (McLean, 2005). Interference, also called noise, can come from any source. A professional communication context may involve business suits (environmental cues) that directly or indirectly influence expectations of language and behaviour among the participants. “The context of the communication interaction involves the setting, scene, and expectations of the individuals involved” (McLean, 2005). Surroundings, people, animals, technology, can all influence your communication. ![]() “The environment is the atmosphere, physical and psychological, where you send and receive messages” (McLean, 2005). Verbal or nonverbal, all these feedback signals allow the source to see how well, how accurately (or how poorly and inaccurately) the message was received (Leavitt & Mueller, 1951). Feedback is composed of messages the receiver sends back to the source. When you respond to the source, intentionally or unintentionally, you are giving feedback. “The receiver receives the message from the source, analyzing and interpreting the message in ways both intended and unintended by the source” (McLean, 2005). Written channels include letters, memorandums, purchase orders, invoices, newspaper and magazine articles, blogs, email, text messages, tweets, and so forth. Spoken channels include face-to-face conversations, speeches, phone conversations and voicemail messages, radio, public address systems, and Skype. “The channel is the way in which a message or messages travel between source and receiver.” (McLean, 2005). ![]() The message brings together words to convey meaning, but is also about how it’s conveyed - through nonverbal cues, organization, grammar, style, and other elements. “The message is the stimulus or meaning produced by the source for the receiver or audience” (McLean, 2005). By watching for the audience’s reaction, the source perceives how well they received the message and responds with clarification or supporting information. The source encodes the message by choosing just the right order or the best words to convey the intended meaning, and presents or sends the information to the audience (receiver). The source imagines, creates, and sends the message. Table 1.1 The Communication Process Source ![]() The communication process can be broken down into a series of eight essential components, each of which serves an integral function in the overall process: source, message, channel, receiver, feedback, environment, context, and interference. 1.3 Eight Essential Components of Communication ![]() ![]() While on screen, she maintained her virtue, but behind the scenes, the company allowed her to be a little more naughty, sending a Christmas card out in 1931 that portrayed her in bed with Santa Claus, winking at the viewer. This also suited her character's age-according to a 1932 interview with Max Fleischer, Betty was only supposed to be only 16 years old. This childish sexuality was a perfect balance for the flapper image Betty represented. This was reflected in her design, where her large head is more reminiscent of a baby than of a human adult. In her appearance with Cab Calloway in Minnie the Moocher, for example, she's just a scared little girl who has run away from home. ![]() Characters would often try to take a peep at her and in many episodes, she would have to fight off a man who was trying to get fresh with her.ĭespite all this, she still maintained a girlish innocence. For this reason, there was a lot more sexuality in the cartoons themselves, she not only has cleavage, but in the episode above and in Bamboo Isle, Â she didn't even have a top on. Unlike most cartoons we see today, her episodes were made to appeal to adult audiences. Adult Animationīetty was one of the first sex symbols of animation and she remains one of the most famous. She was given her own series that same year and dubbed "The Queen of the Animated Screen." Her cartoon series was so popular that many other characters got their start in her series, including Popeye. Becoming A Starīy 1932, Betty was the lead star of the Talkarttoons. Creators say that her appearance in the movie did help inspire her name later on though. Many people believe that Betty got her name in the 1931 cartoon Betty Co-ed, but the Betty this one was named after was a different character in the film. In Betty's first cartoon appearances, the supporting character didn't have a real name and was called "Nancy Lee" or "Nan McGrew" in a few episodes. As Betty proved to be more and more popular, she evolved into a full human by 1932, her floppy ears turned into hoop earrings and her poodle nose was morphed into a cute button nose. The character was based on the looks of singer Helen Kane (pictured), best known for her song "I Wanna Be Loved By You," and actress Clara Bow, who was the inspiration for Betty's Brooklyn accent. Because she was created for Bimbo, she was originally an anthropomorphic poodle character, but she still had her Betty charms. A Real Dogīetty's first appearance was in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes, where she was designed to be an object of lust for Bimbo, a dog character who was currently the lead in many of Max Fleischer's Talkartoons. A relic of the jazz era, she was an icon of hope for Americans suffering through the Great Depression as her flapper persona reminded them of good times from the past. Betty Boop celebrated her 80th birthday this month, as her first appearance on film occurred on August 9, 1930. After all, Celemony has blazed open a radically new avenue of access to musical editing that for ten years now has made it impossible to imagine music production without it. Host and Grammy manager James McKinney opened with the legendary question posed long ago by Melodyne inventor Peter Neubäcker: “What does a stone sound like?” A truly philosophical approach to the world of sound technology, far away from the purely technical thought-processes that typically prevail in the industry, and yet it is for precisely that reason Celemony was chosen to receive this year’s Technical Grammy. The first of the Special Merit Awards to be presented went to the Munich software house Celemony. And perhaps also the strangest,” commented Melodyne inventor Peter Neubäcker.
